Cecile Richards, former president of Planned Parenthood, is coming to Portland this Friday to support Gov. Kate Brown’s re-election bid.

Richards has made a name for herself fighting policy that restricts reproductive rights. You might remember her from a 2015 congressional hearing, in which she rebuked bogus claims that Planned Parenthood was illegally selling fetal tissue for profit — and burned former GOP Rep. Jason Chaffetz over his painfully unscientific chart.

Richards stepped down as president of Planned Parenthood earlier this year, prompting speculation that she may be considering a run for public office. But this Friday’s campaign stop will be on behalf of Brown, whose policies have made Oregon the best state in the country for reproductive rights. Brown's opponent, Republican Rep. Knute Buehler, has shied away from conversations about women's reproductive health and abortion access..

Brown and Richards’ Friday rally will be hosted by the Planned Parenthood PAC of Oregon in the quad at Portland Community College’s Cascade Campus at noon.

Later Friday evening, Richards will stop by feminist clothier Wildfang’s SW 10th Ave. storefront to discuss healthcare and women’s rights. Proceeds from the ticketed event will be donated to Planned Parenthood PAC of Oregon to support Brown's re-election.

Planned Parenthood is also one of the main organizations fighting against Oregon's Measure 106, a proposal to cut public funding from abortions.

The most recent polls put Brown’s lead over Buehler within the standard margin of error, so bringing in a nationally recognized figure like Richards could help energize the incumbent governor’s base as the midterms draw to a close.
